Choosing the Size & Medium

Choosing the Size

Artwork can be produced in any size to suit your exact needs. The most popular sizes are 8″x10″ / A4, 12″x16″ and 16″x20″.

Pencil, pastel, and watercolor portraits are created on paper that’s slightly larger—about one or two inches—than the final portrait size. This extra space makes it easy to fit a mount on top when you’re framing it.

If you’re thinking about commissioning a pencil, pastel, or watercolor portrait, these mediums are usually framed with a mount as well as the frame and this will add to the overall size of your artwork.

Larger artworks usually take longer to paint and this is reflected in the price.

Choosing the Medium

Choosing a medium really comes down to what you like best. Personally, I think dogs look absolutely stunning when painted in oils or pastel.

Framing your artwork with a mount and a frame really enhances the look of graphite, colored pencil, pastel, and watercolor paintings, giving them a beautifully finished look.

Portraits on canvas board and canvas are framed with a frame only.

You can hang your canvas portrait without a frame if you like as I always make sure to paint the edges in a dark tone that beautifully complements the artwork.

Feel free to check out the samples of previous commissions in the gallery section—they’re a great way to see how each medium looks. If you’re uncertain about anything, I’m more than happy to help you out with any questions you have.

Choosing a Reference Photo

If you have a favorite photo of your dog or pet, that’s a fantastic choice to use! It probably captures their unique personality and looks just like them.

It would be great if your photo is clear and high resolution. If you’re unsure whether your photo is too dark or blurry, feel free to reach out—I’d be more than happy to help.
